A little background information first. About 20 years ago my neighbor gave me $20 to spend at a coin store so I picked this up for $9 and a bunch of other space fillers. The first thing I did when I got home was clean them using salt and vinegar (ya, I know... I was about 11 years old). I think I spared this one since it was already shiny although I may have lightly cleaned it but can't remember for sure. So if you identify any signs of cleaning please let me know. Thanks!

Hi, rkp, It looks like you can see some pitting from the salt.

But, still not a bad coin for $9 bucks.

Oh! BTW... Welcome to the Forum.

Your 1909 looks great, the planchet quality was hit and miss in 1909. Some of the pitting could be from a weaker strike, which this coin appears to have. It's a keeper!

Hello RKP, Welcome to to site.I think you did very well for $9.00and the coin is sweet with the rainbow toning and all.I would also ask you if, on the reverse on the stem(left side)below the letter O in the word OF, is that a die gouge I see below the wheat fruit (seeds)?

Thank you for your comments!

morgans dad: That's a great eye you have (especially considering my poor picture). Yes, I think that is a die gouge below on the stem.

Would you assign this at least an AU55?

RKP - The coin looks mint state to me. I don't see a rub on the cheek from these pictures, that's the first place to show wear on a Wheat. Probably MS63 RB or so.
