after reading so many posts, about errors and varieties (Lincoln cents), and starting to search through MANY jars of coins, and not really being positive that I have (or have NOT) found any varieties, I am wondering just how rare, or common finding these varieties actually are. IE one in several hundred, one in several thousand. I sense the very obvious expertise of many of the contributors here, and would appreciate the input from this forum. thanks

Your question is really too broad. It is all dependent on the date and coin series and what you are referring to as varieties- 1982 large and small date Lincolns are varieties and I am sure you have found those, they just do not happen to be rare. The 1982s would be "intentional" varieties, meaning that they were a planned design alteration. Other varieties, like RPMs and doubled dies, are not intentional and therefor tend to be uncommon to rare.

point taken. I guess I was referring to the error variations, like double dies or mint errors, rather than just the 60, or 82 small date/large date occurrences.

Errors and varieties are two different things.

In my opinion, the following piece written by coppercoins should be required reading for everyone. Well, at least for everyone who needs to read it. :)

Errors are very hard to come by.

Every coin is a variety but most date/ mm have only a single variety. Usually we reserve the term for only the scarcer varieties where two or more exist.

Disregarding major types like the '82 sm and lg dates and errors the number of varieties in circulation is dependent on denomination. Cents minted since 1959 are probably fewer than .01% major varieties. (Of course there are far more minor varieties. Quarters appear to be about .2% major varieties but it does depend on one's definition of "major". Nickels are tough and dimes only a little easier.

If you're not finding them it's probably because most of these are really tough to spot until you've actually seen one. Otherwise it's like trying to spot the differnce in the drawings for kids in the Sunday paper.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
