Dear Forum members I have an 1856 Flying Eagle cent which was in the collection of my late father. He collected coins from circulation, so none of his collection was in the XF+ or higher condition, and The 1856 cent is no exception. I have submitted it to PCGS and NGC for grading and authentication but both have returned it as 'date unreadable'. I have used my computer and scanner to examine the obverse and am as sure as I can be that the coin is truly an 1856. the defining element is the "6" and the ball of the upper portion of the 6 and it's proximity to the closed loop of the 6 is evident in the scan and neither the 1857 or 1858 would appear like this. Measurement of the position of the 6 and comparison with photos of high grade coins show the 6 to be in exactly the right spot. Question arise as to why the coin was saved having had the bulk of its devices worn flat. Perhaps it was in someones pocket for a lifetime after getting it from a grandfather with the admonition to save it as it was rare. Hoping to get a Poor 1 grade for the lowball collectors. Any one have any suggestions as to how to proceed with this attribution project?

If PCGS and NGC can't find evidence of the exact date, I doubt our guesses are going to be very useful.

the constraint on the limits on file size this web page imposes prevents me from linking a photo which is adequate to show the remains of the date. I was not really looking for a decision by the other forum members as to validity of my claim to 1856, but some suggestions on how to get the coin to someone who can submit it to PCGS or NGC beside myself, as I think some dealer/submitters have influence in determination of coins grade.

I tried the NGC verification.. There was no photo showing and it stated "Illegible Date". I'm sure if you were to submit it again, you would get the same answer. They will only look at a coin under 10x glass and if it isn't legible then, it is returned as such.

Can you just show us a straightforward pic of the date area, as large as you can? How much of the date is visible?

I don't believe NGC makes the high res images publicly available like PCGS does.

Could send to ANACS and try your luck there. Maybe they will be more willing to stick their neck out on it than PCGS and NGC were.
