Can anyone tell me the composition of this medallion included in one of the 2001 sets? Also is this a specimen finish? Appreciate any info you can contribute. Cheers, Bill

I think these were only sold in 2001 sets. And I'm pretty sure they had a coating on them, alot of them wear off http://goccf.com/t/359292 this is from another member

I don't believe these came in a set. A Mint souvenir according to Charlton's. Cupro-nickel

From my understanding medallions were offered in sets for 1999, 2000 and I assumed 2001. I was able to find a reference to it in my 2006 Charlton, 60th edition (photo below}. Cheers, Bill

There is a set with this medallion! 312790127349Looks like the same Mint souvenir medallion I found earlier in Charlton's. Does it stick to a magnet? If not - cupro nickel. If it does - plated steel. Charlton's says it's circulation finish.

I believe SPP-Ottawa wrote that section in Charlton's, ( RCM medallions), maybe you can get his input.

Thanks a lot DBM, It is not magnetic and is slightly larger than a 25 cent coin. It also looks a little thicker than the 25 cent, guess that's why it weighs so much more. Medallion weighs 6.4 grams and the 25 cent 4.4 grams. I would have thought because the 2001P set is multi-ply plated steel that the medallion would have been the same composition, apparently not.
Cheers, Bill

In 2001 the mint produced cupro-nickel five cent coins as well as plated steel ones. Perhaps they used some of that stock? Nickels are thicker than quarters.
