Hi all, I got my first Tibet coin in a bulk lot the other day. Coinoscope identified it as 1 Sho. Numista lists 1 Sho as 25mm diam and 1.3mm thick however mine is 24.5mm diam and 1.5mm thick. This was enough to ring alarm bells that this be a counterfeit. Also, the obverse and reverse seem about 15o out of whack. Before I consign it to the fake bin I thought I would seek another opinion(s) first. Also, I can date modernish Nepalese coins but this is a whole new beastie so any advice welcome. Many thanks Apologies that the images are not aligned 100% Edited by David Graham 07/10/2021 02:38 am

@dg, I'm no expert on these, but will tell you that for a circulated coin, a half mm difference in diameter, 0.2 mm difference in thickness, and slight orientation issue doesn't raise any particular flags for me. How is the weight?

Even the genuine examples can look a bit dodgy. I think that this one is genuine.

Here are some images of my Tibetan Sho for comparison. I round my diameter measurements to the nearest mm, and have this listed as 24 mm. For reference, it weighs 5.9 g.

I believe that the quality control of those Tibetan coins was quite poor by our standards. I would not have any issues with that coin at all.

Thanks for the replies. Weight is 5.96g so that seems to fit. Just have to date the little bugger now!

@dg, if you use the CCF search box with the keywords DATE and TIBET, you will find several good threads that talk about determining the date via the year and cycle. Here is a link to one: http://goccf.com/t/262969
