Apparently, a 2017 metal-detector trove of 107 Roman coins found in the Netherlands has been studied and a verdict has been rendered: they were left by travelers wishing for safe passage between 27 BC and 180 AD. As for the conclusion: "ritual purposes" is the standard fallback explanation. When a normal person is asked a question about a mystery that they don't know the answer to, they say "We don't know". An archeologist answers "It was for ritual purposes". Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. halfamind Pillar of the Community United States 1534 Posts	Posted 07/16/2021 06:42 am Number of coins found was a little over 100, although obviously some may have been corroded or washed away with time. Doesn't seem like a huge number to me, especially if spread over more than 200 years. Perhaps it was more like a modern-day tossing of coins into a fountain, as there has always been a human fascination with that "ritual," even today? Report this Post to the Staff
