I was reading in another post by someone that they actually were minting silver coins untill 1996 because of something going on at the mint. So is it possible and if so how would you even test if it's silver? I'm having the same issue with the 1990 5pence small coin. I don't think it's silver but I have 3 and I know there is silver out there. I also found them in the roll of dimes that had silver in the roll so made me wonder. I know the 1990 small pence had like over 1billion minted compared to like the 20,000 mintage for the silver ones so I doubt they are silver. But how can I test if something is silver or nickle-copper ?

If a weight test is inconclusive, you could test the composition via an X-ray fluorescence test. A qualified jeweler could help you, but would likely charge you some $$$.

I'll just test the weight. The likely hood that a 1966 americain dime is probably like 1/1000000 and the 5pence like 1/10000000

And pics, including one of the edge, will help.

For the British 5p, I think both the standard cupro-nickel and the silver proof weigh 3.25g. I think the milling is finer on the proofs, but I've never seen one. The silver proof 5p was only issued in a set with the last of the old large-size 5p's (also in silver) for £24.50. I suppose it's just possible some got into circulation.

For the American dime, 90% silver would weigh 2.5 grams. The clad is 2.27 g.

Last year for 90% silver in the U.S. was 1964.

Scratch that about the dime. I think even the silver dimes minted in 1966 were dated for 1964. As for the 5 pence pieces I'll have to weigh em, I think I did earlier and they were like 2.6 grams but I don't remember I'll check them when I'm home

I doubt they are silver especially since there are 3 I found in ine dime roll, lol 5p equals 9¢ so just under 10¢ value. Luckily for me when I find a foreign coin my bank gives me the denominations I should have gotten(dimes in this case) but let me keep the foreign currency, so all foreign coins I find are free(not including USA coins).

Ya, yet they still can't sell me Penny's lol. To bad this branch is closing in September 10th for good. Also I was the only one coin swapping rolls for the longest time apparently because someone else came in asking about coins and they gave them some that they put aside for me:p so mayb I have some local competition coin hunting. I know some collectors on here are from my home town. So it could have been a random stop.
