Hello I'm nick. I acquired this penny from a store after buying a coffee. I was wondering if someone can look at this and tell me what causes this to happen.

Whatever caused it , it didn't happen during the striking of the coin so it
Is some form of damage.

Thanks for response. It looks to me as if the copper alloy. Didn't bond to zinc. I'm not sure.

If the copper didn't bond to the zinc, it would cause a raised area that you should be able to depress.
