Hey,

I found this coin/medallion in a bundle of bronze coins. I've managed to idenify all of them except this one. It looks like a 1st place prize for an event in 1981, because it has a person standing on what looks like a first place podium. On the back it looks like the logo from the Olympics (even though there was no 1981 Olympic games) and google translate detects the text on the back as "inter factories cliff" in French which doesn't ring any bells. It is approximately 5cm (2 inches) in diameter.

Does anyone know what this might relate to, or could be for? Thanks in advance for any help.

Nick

Just tried checking it out the other way around and I'm fairly sure it is 1981. The top section of the 8 is slighly smaller than the bottom section, so when it is the other way around the 8 looks like an odd top heavy 8.

That is a weird one. At about 2 inches in diameter, it does seem to be a medal. I see an odd raised circle between "INTER" and USINES". Does that correspond to the circle above the person on the rev? For the five rings, since they don't overlap, this isn't an official product for the Olympics I think. Also, anything on the edge for writing or other marks?

Added: also, welcome to CCF!

Thanks for the reply. Yeah the circle does correspond to the ring between "INTER" and USINES". I did think it was odd that the rings didn't overlap and they look thicker than the rings on typical Olypmic medals/coins. The edges just have lots of vertial slits down it. Similar to the edges of a UK 5 & 10 pence. One thing I will also add that it feels quite heavy for the size of it.

Something to add. "Falaise" translates to cliff in French, but is also a place in France https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falaise,_Calvados Birth place of William The Conqueror apparently.

"Usines" in French is a plant or a factory. Might be a long shot but I'm wondering if some plants/factories in Falise, France had some kind of sport competition in 1981 and decided to make a medal. They put an Olympic style logo on it for a bit of fun. Looking at the edges of the medal they aren't perfectly cut and are a little uneven. I'm sure someone who worked with metal in a factory professionally could knock up something like that.
