I have no idea if it's from the coin or a welded piece of something....
Any ideas.

Typical of a hard silver mounting, most of which has been filed down.
This coin was probably used as part of a money clip or tie clip, but the clip part has been removed.
What remains of the clip mounting amounts to rather gruesome damage to the coin, unfortunately.

To me it looks like some type of putty, like JB Weld. Would a acetone soak do any good?
