Scanned the forum and may have found part of my answer. Curious if anyone collects these or if they have value or silver, what is the history of them? Were they a real coin at some point?

. They were a real coin to start with. They are called love tokens. Value is more sentimental, but it would also have so called melt value.

Love tokens are worth much more than melt value. At least twice melt, more for interesting pieces, less for uninteresting/ damaged pieces. There is a strong collector interest. Check ebay sales prices for an idea.

I like that one. Learned a bit about them when I got one. I also just got a iPhone and I do not like it. There are collectors for these, and you can look on ebay to see what they are being sold for. From what I read and learned is that these coins where made for the love one they left behind for going of to war or the gold rush to scout new territory and make a claim since the government was giving land to folks that would migrate West. The dangers of going west of course was the Indians. During the 1890s was the Indian wars. I'm no pro, but just what I read about them. I hope this helped

This is a good example of a love token. It was made by planing off one side of a coin and having an experienced engraver or jeweler carve a design. They could be used a pocket pieces, turned into a necklace charm, or have a pin soldered on the back to be worn on a shirt.

These were usually created on Seated dimes, but it can be found on many other designs. They sell for more than melt value, and can really jump in price depending on the coin it is engraved on and the design.
