Can someone tell me the difference between identifying damage and things that shouldn't be?

The nickel has a mint mark D with a kinda void around it. The coins in pretty good shape For as old as it is, how can I tell what's damage and what's an error. Is this just a deep stamp or is it possibly another D or other letter under it..
... and same with the quarter. The eagle has an S type curve on its chest, but not about or indent, so I wouldn't say damage, but if it is, what causes damage that can add to an image rather than take away from it? I haven't seen anythingosted similar in error so it's most likely damages, but if so, Why is it a damage rather than error when something looks unique as opposed to being unique and valuable when a machine does a similar thing rather than nature? Lol

@mze, a couple general thoughts first: please start a new thread for each new coin. Also, please orient your pics with the coin facing straight up and down. Not a big deal, but those things help us to help you.

For the nickel, the mintmark looks pretty normal to me, but a close-up of that region might show more. Have you looked on varietyvista for known RPMs yet?

For the quarter, that vaguely S-shaped mark on the eagle's chest is damage. Metal has been scraped to form a bit of a ridge.
