I'm a neophyte coin collector and a new forum member (joined tonight). My question is - I found a 1985 Lincoln Penny with a D mint mark that has the look of a steel penny. It doesn't stick to a magnet. There is a nice patina to the coin and it's in really good shape. Is this a real non-copper penny or did someone remove the copper? Can anyone help!?

the copper was most likely removed, it could also be plated with something.

- Likely it has had the copper removed.

Glad to have you aboard!

!

But I think what someone did was put a shiny penny on top of a lamp and let it slowly heat there. I did this with a lot of pennies back in the day when I had incandescent light bulbs and so the pennies would lose their copper plating and turn out white and sort of green looking...

Welcome to the forum. Without pics, its hard to say. I'm thinking plated. My kids had a project in school where they plated pennies

See that is why there is this thing here. We all want to welcome people so much it is as common as a smiling face.
The chances that that coin has had the Copper removed, plated at school chem class, coated for the fun of it by almost anyone. I've seen at places where they demomstrate Chome cleaners by polishing a cent. It turns a little like Silver.
Of course there is a possibility that some dumb counterfeiter made it out of pure Platinum.

OK I have some pics - I didn't know it was so hard to photograph coins! I tried proping it up with other coins & white & black backgrounds. This is the best shots I have, Any tips on doing a better job of taking coin pics?

I'm going to try & upload these now. If anyone can see them let me know & also let me know what the coin is.

NOTE: When I tried to upload the pics I got a message that the file or something has too much attached (file name I think) and that the picture was too big. I send pics in my e-mails all the time with no problem. I don't know much more about computers than I do about coins. With that statement said - can anyone guide me through uploading pics?

I am far from being an expert myself, but I can say the best advice is found in the Coin Photography Forum!

Start with the Photo Upload Tutorial. Keep in mind that your files need to be under 100k in size, or else you will have to host them off-site (photobucket, flickr, etc). You can resize them with the "Paint" program that comes with Windows (using the stetch/skew feature), but the I feel its JPG algorithm is rather inefficient and the image ends up being too small after getting it below 100k. If you need help resizing them, I can recommend some free programs to do the job a little easier and without having to shrink the resolution down too much.
