Hi all,
I have a little Hong Kong 5 cent coin that I am looking for some help with. It appears to have extra bits of metal attached the the coin.

The coin is .800 silver, but doesn't appear to look silver. I am leaning towards it has been dipped in nickel or something, but I thought I'd see what you all think.

It could have been dipped, but also looks cleaned. (Possibly both)
I have weighed it, and it weighs correctly.

Sorry about the images. I am not looking for help grading the coin, and it is not a super rare coin, so the images aren't the best.

Thanks,

Coinanthebarbarian

It looks like the coin was used as a jewelry piece. The tiny bits of metal that extend from the edge are mounting points or where the coin was linked to other coins. The fact that the coin seems to be plated would seem to lend to the idea that this was used as jewelry.

The cleaning, plating and extra bits of metal soldered to the coin are all Post Mint Damage.

I didn't think of it being made into jewellery. That seems like the most likely idea.

Thanks a tonne,

I have a 1935 George V HK 10 Cents, dia 20.5 mm, but at the weight of an .800 silver 10 Cents, at 2.72 grams. Genuine 1935 10 Cents were all struck in copper nickel, and weigh in at 2.18 grams. It obviously appears to be silver.

Alas, my coin is not an off metal strike, using an old silver planchet - the lettering is a bit too indistinct and distorted - it has to be a counterfeit. The coin dealer pointed this out before he sold it to me.
I have yet to figure out why a HK 10 Cents counterfeit would struck in .800 silver, when all genuine 1935's were in Cu Ni.

Unlike the OP's coin, my example does not appear to have any signs of jewelry mount marks.
