I am intrigued by the world of error notes. I find all types of error notes fascinating, but for this post I will focus on mismatched serial numbers.

I purchased my first mismatched serial number a couple years ago at a local coin show. I proceeded to have the note graded by BCS. It came back with a grade of VF20. Recently I was fortunate enough to find a second mismatched serial number which coincidentally happens to be the same year, denomination and prefix. The second note appears to be a similar grade as the first note. Both notes aren't high grades, but are still collectible in my humble opinion.

After I purchased the second note it got me thinking. I wonder how many of these older notes are still in existence? I searched the internet for 1954 one dollar notes with mismatched serial numbers and while my results are by no means conclusive, I was a bit surprised by what I found. There are at least four different prefixes of 1954 one dollar notes with mismatched serial numbers.

They are as follows:

H/O prefix - 14 notes
A/O prefix - 4 notes
L/F prefix - 1 note
D/Z prefix - 1 note

All the above error notes are "modified portrait" and the majority of the notes were printed by the CBN. Only the L/F and D/Z prefixes were printed by the BABN.

I would be interested to know if there is a database of error notes out there that can be used for reference purposes.

Those 2 notes are fantastic finds & I think most collectors would readily agree with you. I have a healthy respect for error notes, especially in terms of how scarce they are. I spent a great deal of time haggling with a seller from a Kitchener coin show for this $10 Journey note, which I still paid a small fortune for:

-especially considering its condition.

To answer your question, I know no site dedicated solely for the purpose of error notes but the best site for CDN currency is undoubtedly: https://cdnpapermoney.com/forum/
They actually started their Serial Number Data Base for the purpose of tracking the double-denomination revised 2005 $10 note (a Ten made with the watermark/security thread $20 paper). If you haven't already done so, I would register with them and post your finding there. In the past, they set up wiki registers for rare prefixes and many be able to do the same for the mismatched serial numbers from 1954.

Thank you for the information. I have actually browsed this website on occasion. I didn't realize the website has a wiki register on the website. I will have to register with them.

By the way, thanks for sharing the picture of the $10 Journey error note. Are you going to get the note graded?

- you're welcome (hope it helps).

No, I don't plan on grading the error.

I picked this one up at an online auction this month. It was "buried" in a lot with a numbers of coin sets. I think it has a chance to end up with an EF grade, but most likely will be a higher VF grade. In any case I am very pleased with it.

Wow, stunning find! Very impressed with your note hunting skills. Great eye for the H/O prefix & what appears to be the same sheet serial # error.

Thank you!

I have now documented at least 15 H/O error notes that have survived extinction. The lowest mismatched serial number I have seen with an H/O prefix ends in 2033 and the highest is 2961. I know the serial numbers are not sequential on the 1973 one dollar sheets, but I am not sure about the printing process for the 1954 notes. It would appear that a number of sheets were printed before someone noticed the error.

I have a H/O note with serial numbers 3272080/3372080
I bought it on ebay about 7 years ago, got it graded by PMG MS64
The collector I bought it from told me he was in a coin club in the 60's in the Vancouver, BC area.
At a meeting, someone brought in a bunch of these and were selling them to the members as novelties for a nominal price.
The collector I bought this from said he had purchased several and that this one is the nicest of the bunch.

I too recently was able to win an auction on ebay that included a 1937 J/A note in should be VF that hidden in a group of banknotes that also include a H/A and osborne signature $1 & $2 but these other notes were in VG at best condition.

Update to this old thread. I decided to get the other 2 notes graded. I sent them in a few weeks ago and received them back yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised with the results.
