Hello
This is my first post!

I was at a market and saw Indian Head cents that were advertised as uncirculated however they showed small scratches and such on them. Sadly I have no pictures. However the details on each of the coins was really impressive all the details to look for where there.
Besides the point.
Main question: Is a coin that has minor scratches and such from light circulation still more valued than a coin that has been cleaned and some explanation would be nice to?

Thanks

One of the main characteristics to look for, in identifying a cleaned coin in high EF to AU grades, is the lack of luster.

As with almost every question about collectible coins, the answer is "it depends."

A coin can be uncirculated and still have nicks and scratches due to handling before the coin was intended to go into circulation (for instance if the coin was shipped from the mint to banks in bags).

I think collectors who have been around a long time strongly prefer uncirculated coins over attractive coins that have been cleaned, especially for modern issues.
I think the idea is that a cleaned coin is no longer in its "natural" state; it's been tampered with.

That said, for some older types, many of the higher grade coins have been cleaned at some time in the past, and it becomes very difficult to find uncleaned examples, so a collector may settle for such a coin.

Personally, I assume every circulated coin to have been cleaned. Especially those before 1950 in a time when cleaning coins was not only common but recommended. So I buy based solely on eye appeal. Also, on the subject of Indian Head cents, I once posed the question to an older dealer as to how a coin that old remained full red for so many years. Apparently, shellac or clear varnish was applied to preserve them, which acetone removes.
