I know that it is a shilling. I looked it up in a world coins book and they list 1939-1946 and come back up a 1949-19somethinbut no 1947. Any idea on value, seems to be silver.

You've somehow managed to get that picture mirror-imaged - and it looks to me like a 2 shillings coin (florin) rather than a shilling.

Both shillings and florins were issued in 1947, they're listed in the Krause world coin catalogues (KM# 863, 864 and 865). The listing for the earlier type stops at 1946 because they changed composition from silver to cupronickel in that year. If your coin is 1947,. then it's not silver. Sorry.

They changed the design 2 years later because India seceded from the Empire in 1948 and they had to take IND IMP (Emperor of India) off the coins.
