Given the photo posted, I'm not seeing an error. I checked some online images of '48 S wheat cents and they compare closely on date alignment.

The numbers in the date are all transferred from the master die to the working hubs to the individual dies, so it's impossible to have numbers higher or lower on one die than another unless there are multiple design styles for that year. The numbers are not punched individually the way mint marks were.

The bottom of the numbers line up which is correct.
On the left hand column there is a thread called "US Coin Facts"
By making use of this, you can answer many of your own questions.
