Hi all,

Firstly thanks for all the help with my previous enquiries about Indian coins. I did manage to ID my third coin yesterday.
My fourth coin is being a bit difficult. Have put the size into Zeno but still have 20 pages of coins of which none seem to fit. Am hoping to use the date to narrow it down but am having trouble deciphering it so am once again turning to the learned members of CCF.
I have assumed the area in red is the date but please correct me if that's not right.

Thanks

For success in Zeno the weight is needed, and this key information should always be posted when asking for attribution of an older Indian coin. Please also post the diameter. This is a Sultanate coin, though I'm not sure which Sultanate, and the date in the red area looks like AH 809 (approx. AD 1408).

Hi Seeker55 - I deliberately didn't post the weight and diameter as I was hoping to have another go at identifying it with a bit more info on the date. The measurements are:
Diameter ~18mm
Weight ~9.9g
Material - copper

I tried 880 and a few other dates earlier but not 809. Can I ask what characteristics indicate a sultanate coin?

Thanks

Thanks for posting the weight and diameter. In general, all available information is needed to ensure correct attributions of Indian coins.

Yes, andyg is right, Sultans of Jaunpur. A billon tanka of 80 rati, Ibrahim Shah, AH 804-844 = AD 1402-1440, GG J6. (So a date of AH 809 makes sense). The date was a bit confusing on this one - I can see how it could be read 880 or 911 as well as 809.

For me the writing style indicates a Sultanate coin. Also, I have one of these, so it looked familiar, especialy the distinctive part about 9 o'clock toward the center on the third photo.

It's J27 (I was almost right with J17 lol) with a date of 880.

As for how to tell Sultanate coins from Princely states,
Sultanate coins are usually text on both sides, Princely state coins tend to be cruder with partly pictorial designs... although not always!

With Zeno and dates - use a date range rather than the exact year if you can't find it first time, these Tanka's were issued over many years and Zeno may not have one dated 880, but there are lots of similar coins with dates close to 880.

Thanks for the replies and additional information. I couldn't find this coin on Zeno but it was on Numista.

Odd, when I entered the size and Jaunpur into the category it only showed 1 coin.
