Found this one in a roll marked 1983. Just a roll of coins someone collected from circulation, mostly in fairly decent condition. It was too late last night to post it when I found it.

In general, this is a coin I really don't understand. I've only read a little about these, and it has never really sunk in as exactly what is going on nor how it happened (and what does CLO stand for?). But they are really quite collectible and sell for good money so I always look for them. This one is really close in condition to the one in my collection so I'll keep both until I eventually find a really nice one.

Very cool find! This is a variety I feel I haven't looked hard enough for, always seems to slip my mind when I'm looking at 83's.

CountercLash Obverse = CLO? Or maybe just CLashed Obverse? I don't know where CLO's are listed, what reference is that?

I believe some have this categorized as a Type II counterclash.

From maddieclashes:

Quote:
TYPE II Counter clash. This type of clash is very rare due to the conditions needed to produce this type of clash. During the striking process, a piece of foreign material enters the striking chamber. This could be part of another die or any material that is hard enough to have a full or partial design element impressed into the surface of that material. So, the first striking of the foreign object leaves an impression of a design element. If that piece of debris is left in the striking chamber, the second strike may transfer that design element back onto the die face from the foreign object. Like the other counter clash, there could be an offset of positions between the original design element and the clashed design element left by the foreign object.

A cool example pictured on that site is a 1983 cent struck from the same dies as CLO-002, but before the clash. Proves this is a die event and not something with hubbing.

If I am not mistaken I believe CLO means Counterclash Obverse or CLash Obverse. If I am wrong I apologize. I have observed these before and I too have never seen an explanation of exactly what CLO stands for thus my interpretation as mentioned. Mike Diamond has a good write up on Error-Ref if you'd like to read it. Here is another good write-up on the topic. Regardless, good find TB!

Yeah I was thinking it was a type II counterclash, but was quickly getting my info from LincolnCentResource and they were using the CLO-002 and their description was kind of odd.

Nice find TB. These counterclashes are very neat but I haven't been fortunate to get one.

There was an online auction in 2018(?) that had two of each type of counterclash for 1983 in the lot and they were in the old "soap bar" slabs and graded 66/67 but using the Breen number. It was even harder to find comparable info for value back then. I hoped others would miss it because of the Breen number not being used as much. I put in a strong bid but the lot sold for $3000-$4000. ... Sigh!
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups.
We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.

Thanks all! Yes, these are worth looking for, but seldom found. Right now ebay shows none in the sold column and the one listed currently is not that die at all. So a coin with a big zero on ebay, which should give an idea of just how rare they are.
