Well it could be struck through gritty grease, but I'm not sure.

There may have been a coating of grease and grime that was on the reverse die. The incuse devices would not be blocked out as they are raised on the die. But if the raised devices were filled with grease and grime and other debris, it could prevent these incuse devices to be prevented on the raised devices on the die. IE: Us oldsters remember the rubber stamp that was used to deposit check with the mark on the reverse of the check. What happened when the rubber stamp got clogged with grime and debris. The raised letters would be blocked out and prevented to be readable on checks. So something like this may have prevented raised devices on the reverse to have been blocked out on the strike on the reverse of these incuse devices? The green arrows are the areas I'm talking about. Hope this explanation helps a bit.

Yes I completely understand the rubber stamp comparison thank you. Well put. Basically the die is to a planchet what a bank stamp is to a deposited check or something. They both come down with raised devices stamping an impression on whatever surface it's is struck upon. So my quarter here is like when the bank tellers ink pad is getting dry or he is tired and has bad form. Even the raised lettering can break off when he taps the stamp to the ink pad. Eventually the word "deposit" starts to look like "eposit". Now the some fields start to not show up when they have fallen off or are somehow obstructed.

Then the boss comes around and says "coffee is for closers only" and they change out the die and the poor teller gets sent to the mailroom.

Well I'm glad I got one. Hope I get that raise. Going through some stuff again with the bank fellow on my mind. Lol

Thank you all for your time. Ttyl
