I think I have a canceled 2004-D Wisconsin State Quarter. Giant X scratched into it. All kinds of mangled and deformed but still recognizable as a Wisconsin quarter. Haven't found much on the web except for few canceled dies with similar Xs on them. Those folks were being hush hush looking for answers like I am.

Is this kind of thing even recognized by the mint? Meaning, can I have it submitted for grading because of the rarity that it might be or will I not get it back because it's considered altered?

Will post pics when I get a response.

I think that canceled coins are waffled not marked with an X. Your coin sounds damaged.

@spring, here are a couple threads with examples and information about mint-cancelled coins. I look forward to seeing yours:

Ok yes this looks more like damage to me rather than cancelling. Someone may have been having fun with a metal file.

The mint sold cancelled State Quarter dies for a while, there are quite a few out there. BTW, if a coin was struck with that cancelled die the "X" would be raised above the coin surface.

Interesting, but there is no chance that the coin that you posted was struck by a canceled die.

Well, your Wisconsin-D quarter doesn't seem to match up with the actual obv.die that has been cancelled, so with Spence and nfine here.

Damage, likely in a washer. This is what a washer does. This coin was stuck between the impeller and the tub in my LG washer for almost an entire cycle...

Even if it wasn't a washer, this is in no way, shape, or form and error. Also, the canceled die you've shown looks absolutely nothing like your coin.

@spence

That's part of what I'm wondering about. If I submitted it for grading would they grade it and return it, or say I took a metal knife to it and keep it? I've seen couple other posts about coins like this in the past couple years. Those hit dead ends in their search for information as well.

So this is trash and I should spend this at the laundromat? Is that what your saying?

to the CCF!

I thought you were talking about a canceled coin like the one below. This Susan B. Anthony was graded as Brilliant Uncirculated.

While I've never seen a quarter struck with an X canceled die, it would be interesting!

I have seen dies canceled with a grinder that still had a small area of the design, but I haven't seen any coins struck with partially canceled dies. Here's one from my collection and a Photoshop mockup of the area over a struck coin to show what was left on the die.

That pic of a canceled die was from some post somewhere about what someone thought they heard or found about canceled state die. The person that posted that pic was using it as an example to basically say' "but I don't know how much more of the rest of the face was filed off because no one has actually seen one"
