I've got quite a few dateless buffalos that I've found coin roll hunting, and I can't decide if I should nic-a-date them or not. Obviously the nic-a-date will damage them, but is it any worse than the condition the coins are currently in?

i would not use nic-a-date...
it leaves a nasty "burn" mark...
if anything - if you want to try to reveal the date/mm try using white vinegar. soaking it (some times for several day) usually reveals the date. (not always).
you will still have a damages coin...but you will probably be able to see the date...

I've used the white vinegar method in the past. If you do, be sure the coins are completely submerged and stay submerged for the entire soak and rinse with tap water when done.

I would recommend only nic-a-dating the coin that have mintmarks, none of the philies are worth much Nic-a-dated, but if you find a type 2 1913, at least it will be worth a little.

Forget about the Nic-a-date , I use white vinegar and a little peroxide concoction with good success . You never know if you'll bring up a key date and or mint which will have some value even acid dated .

@T-BOP thanks for the suggestion! Do you recommend just applying a drop to the area of the date/mint mark, or do you submerge the whole coin as others here have suggested? That method seems likely to do more damage than targeted application, but maybe necessary with a weak acid like vinegar? Also, mind elaborating on how the peroxide concoction works? Thanks!

Cover the whole coin in the solution .Sometimes depending on how much the date and or mint was worn down it could take anywhere from 20 minutes to 24 hours . check often , you don't want to over do it , too much acid will defeat the purpose and you'll wind up with one slick coin not being able to see the date at all . Not too sure how the peroxide adds to the bringing up process but it works .
