Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could provide any insight into a Lichfield Cathedral medal I have. It is struck in silver and was designed by J.Davis. I have had quite a few of the bronze Cathedral medals by Davis over the years, but not silver ones.

The medal looks exactly the same as the bronze example, however, there is a very light hallmark on the edge of the medal which appears to read for Fattorini & Sons with the letter for Birmingham, 1975.

I have never heard of any modern 'restrikes' of this series and was wondering if anyone on this forum had?

The medal has been cleaned at some point and so it is fairly bright. The only slight difference with the bronze type I can notice is that the strike does not seem quite as sharp on this medal, mainly when looking at the lettering in the exergue. Maybe it is a case of F&S re using an old medal die to re-issue some medals?

Thanks in advance for any insight anyone can provide!

Jack

How's the weight when compared to bronze? About the same, it could be silver plated. Much lighter, could be white metal (I did find an online reference to this medal in white metal, 61 mm).

Hi John,

The silver medal weighs 103.4 grams against a weight of about 92 grams for the bronze. It certainly isn't white metal such as tin as they are considerably lighter. Also, it would not have been given a hallmark if it were plated. I really am quite confused...it appears to be an antique medal with a modern (very faint) hallmark.

Numista isn't a complete collection. I have many commemorative medals of WWI from multiple belligerents that are not in Numista.

Is there a better database for tokens and medals?

Numista is a user-supported numismatic database. Its listings are there because one or more collectors created/contributed to the listing. If no member collector creates an entry, it won't appear in the database. If you have pieces not in the database, you could benefit the numismatic community by joining Numista and adding to the database!
