@ant, this one seems more like circulation wear than a grease-filled die, but it is hard to know for sure considering the condition. Hopefully someone else can narrow it down to closer than 1950 to 1958. Maybe you can post a really clear close-up of the date? Thx.

What is the weight of your coin. You may have a tapered planchet on that area. That is often the cause of the weakness on the rims. Even some of the date is affected. To try taking images of the area of the edge of the coin with another coin to see how much thinner it is on that area. The lack of thickness on the area, will prevent the strike and the rim on that area.

The way how close the wheats are to the rim makes me agree with tapered planchet.

I agree likely a tapered planchet. This is how they often look on wheat cents, and in a common spot for tapered planchets on wheats as well. It should be underweight if so. Cool find!

Nice example. How is a tapered planchet made? I mean if it is punched from a long and wide copper sheet, would the sheet be tapered or at least not exactly flat or even across it?

Dearborn. The planchet came from either the side or end of the copper strap this area would not be perfectly square.

The weight of the coin is 2.8 grams. So this does seem to be a tapered planchet.

Here is another set of images of the side of the wheat coin.
It does go from thick to thin when viewing it from the side.
Thanks!
