Hi All,

Thoughts on this supposed Gothic Crown? Price is too good to be true. I have researched some posts on fake Gothics already, and don't see the telltale signs other than the rim lettering looks more like fakes than reals. There is a lot of discoloration on the obverse that I suppose may be designed to mask evidence of fakery. Thoughts?

Thanks.

Breathtaking specimen! That would be the crown jewel of my collection. Agreed on price. It's just too good to be real, but the forgery appears to be very well executed in this case. On a coin this rare, I'd probably only buy a graded coin unless from a dealer I trusted without reservation.

There are some exceptionally well made fakes of these, and have already been reported here in the CCF, complete with pictures. I have no doubt that the best fakes have been made from recycled .925 coin silver.

In consideration of this, it is difficult be be certain to give an entirely reliable opinion on a Gothic Crowns that may be pictured on screen.

Weight for coin pictured within the accuracy of the scales and coin Weight Tolerances.
To my eye coin looks OK, but that doesn't mean much in this case.

Under these circumstances, probably the best way to authenticate this coin would be to ask for an authentication and grading from a top level Third Party Grading service, which would also be aware of the possibility of highly deceiving fakes.
Unfortunately, this coin will almost certainly come back with 'details' comment with the obvious damage near Vikkie's chin, and for that reason, they may decline even to grade it. Let's hope that is not the case, because if they think there is a possibly may be be a fake, it will be returned without a grading.
