Sorry, I know nothing about money, so I don't even know what terms to search for. I didn't think it was real, but I figured no one would waste energy faking a $1 bill I found it 15 years ago and kept it because it was weird. It felt wet, and the ink smudged. I threw it in a book and forgot about it. I just found it again and figured I'd ask. Thanks, Edited by scienceguy151 08/25/2021 11:04 am

That is an "Offset Printing" error. A keeper that is certainly worth more than face value Almost forgot To the CCF

I don't think its an error, could be some one oiled a dollar bill and you are seeing the printing from the front.

The bill felt very crisp and new when I got it. It still does. It just felt like the ink hadn't dried yet... which was weird. I smudged the seal and put it away thinking it was probably fake or something.
Why would someone oil a bill?

Why would someone vice a dime and cent together and call it an error? I have no idea. People do dumb stuff all the time.
Look I could be wrong, but the seal smudging and the reverse image on the back, just looks like some one dipped the note in a solvent or oil or something. I can't tell via the pictures what actually occurred. You best bet is to take it to a coin shop and see if they will offer you anything for it.

OK thanks, I was just curious about something weird I found.
I didn't mean to sound argumentative... you're probably right. Like I said, I'm not a money person so I don't know why people do things.

It appears to be a moderate Front-to-Back offset error. I'm a bit confused about the district seal smearing. I've tried rubbing on the district seal on several ordinary notes I've got here at home, and I've even tried dampening my finger, and the district seal doesn't smear on any of the notes I've tried. Does the note have an unusual smell by chance ?

It only smudged when it was new. I don't remember if it had a distinct smell back then. It might have though. It doesn't now. I also can't get it to smudge now.
The fact that it smudged made think it was fake. It was almost like it got double stamped and didn't go through a dryer.
Thanks for all the input
it's a mystery
