I agree. Environmental staining/tarnishing/discolouration. Your nickel has been exposed to some sort of chemical reaction..

Clearer pics would be needed but it looks like an lamination issue, with part of the lam having fallen out.

What does the edge look like on that area? Weight also. Is the metal raised on that area?
