Still playing around with the new camera....

1873 was the year in which the greatest number of US coin types and denominations was minted. The total count of 20 coins includes the cent, 2¢, 3¢ silver, 3¢ nickel, 5¢ nickel, and Half Dime. Then there are the dime, quarter, and half dollar, each of which exists with and without arrows. Next are the seated, trade, and gold dollar coins. Finally, you have the quarter eagle, $3 gold, half eagle, eagle, and double eagle. For the real specialists there are also the Closed 3 and Open 3 varieties for most of these coins. But I digress.....

In any case, I thought that would be one heck of a proof set to assemble. I did get the 3¢ Silver and the 2¢ coins for my proof set, but haven't gotten around to picking up the rest of them. I already posted the 3¢ Silver in the grading forum, so here's the 2¢ piece. No suspense on this one: it's the Closed 3 ("original") variety, graded PR-64 RD by PCGS.

I'm a self professed Two Cent Junkie but only business strikes. Leaves the 1873 out of course.

HOWEVER.

That is a lovely coin and one heck of a set you're working on! Best of luck and keep us posted.

Jaobler - That's a beautiful coin and an interesting statistic about the wide array of coins that existed in 1873. I've often wondered why the production of Half Dimes and the production of (Shield) nickels were allowed to overlap by 7 or 8 years. Wouldn't that be sort of like coming out with a new coin in today's world, giving it a value of 10 cents and calling it a Double Nickel while still leaving the dime in production?
