Truthfully, I don't know and I'm not really sure I care too much either. That's not to say I won't put effort into trying to ensure it gets a good home when the time comes (though considering this is probably 70 years down the line, it's impossible to have any idea of anything), but my collection is for my enjoyment while I'm alive - when I die I can't have any attachment to it so what happens is neither here nor there.
I'd like to hope I can find an enthusiastic younger collector to give it to, but there are going to be fewer and fewer collectors in the future unless some serious work is put into keeping the hobby alive and accessible to people of ALL ages and incomes. I hope I'll still have people around me who I care about (though NOT kids, I have resolved to never have them) and hopefully at least one has a genuine interest in the hobby so I can gift my collection to them. Failing that, I'll just arrange for it to be sold.

If you adopt me I'll gladly take your coin collection. Helder , you might not want my Nickel collections as I don't have any Bison Nickels . I do however have a huge herd of Buffaloes .

I do however have a huge herd of Buffaloes Tony as you are so attached to the Bison nickels, you can pass those on to your real children. I'm certain they will appreciate it. I'll just take the precious metal coins as you have no attachment to those

I have no one I know that wants coins. I have very few relatives and none want coins. I have no idea what will happen to my collection when I pass away. Possibly someone will dump it all in a bank.

@just carl, I no longer want T-Bop's coins. I'll gladly take yours! Especially the Mercury dimes, I love those dimes.

No reason to let them go back into circulation or to people that don't appreciate them

I'm 62 and neither of my kids nor my wife are really interested in my coins and currency collection, so I've left instructions in my will to sell my collection when I'm gone. I've given recommendations on a couple trusted dealers to contact, as well as the name of an auction firm or two if they chose to go that route. While I keep many very detailed Excel spreadsheets for my own use in managing my various collections, I keep a single summarized spreadsheet which contains an inventory of everything I have with all the relevant info a dealer would want to see. I also used to collect antique maps, but that collection is fairly small and my son has already put dibs on that .

Quote: The federal estate tax kicks in at $11.7 million for 2021 so this often isn't a limit most people need to worry about. Some states do have lower limits but many don't impose an inheritance tax as well. The state I live in wants the tax if it is over $1 and it is due the day a person dies. 0 percent on transfers to a surviving spouse or to a parent from a child aged 21 or younger; 4.5 percent on transfers to direct descendants and lineal heirs; 12 percent on transfers to siblings; and 15 percent on transfers to other heirs, except charitable organizations, exempt institutions and government entities exempt from tax. Property owned jointly between spouses is exempt from inheritance tax.

Wife sends to Heritage Auctions or something like that. I'm taking my Jefferson nickels with me. I told St. Peter I'd help upgrade his set.
