A short while ago I posted a steel cent with a pre Cud on the reverse. These can occur anywhere on a coin, but on wheats cents typically on the reverse they are between the wheat and the rim. But the other common place to find them is on the obverse at the bottom of the bust. Here is an example I just pulled out of a roll of mostly cull 1943-P coins. It is an unlisted pre Cud at this point.

Looking at cuds-on-coins to find the match for what this might have turned into (no match) but man 43 was a bad (or good) year for Cuds and pre Cuds.

Steel is just harder than copper to hammer away on. And I probably have at least 15-20 more unlisted ones here needing attention.

I've got a couple of these--somewhere in a box. Very cool.

Really nice precud. Really thick and all the way to the rim!

It's amazing that this part of the hammer die was still in place when your coin was struck. I was under the impression that since the obverse was the hammer die and pulled away from the anvil (reverse) die broken pieces of the die would fall out. Something about the break must have "locked" that piece in place.
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups.
We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.
