basically the question is - does the "early releases" designation, really mean anything. a coin designated MS70, pr proof 70, (or any other grade, for that matter) already implies the condition of the coin. does an early MS70 have any quality superiority, above a MS70 without the "early releases" qualifier.

my personal opinion is that the "early releases" designation is NOT sufficient reason to expect a higher value. I think the "70" designation implies the quality, with or without any other qualifiers.

I agree with your assessment.

Early Releases is a limited label that has nothing to do with the grade of the coin. It is simply signifying that the coin was graded and holdered within the first 30 days of it's official release. Given that this is usually a very limited number of coins, the Early Releases label is always harder to come by than the regular brown label, thus one reason for the premiums charged. Additionally, dealers have to really hustle to get the coins from the Mint, out to the graders, and back from the graders within that window, and usually have to spend extra money to do so. Another reason why they generally charge more for Early Releases holders.

But as for the coins - they are identical, the grade (if the same) is identical.

Given the choice between buying a PF70 or paying more money for the Early Release designation. I would stick with the regular PF70. Its essentially the same coin in the same grade.

Chuck, I understand why they charge a premium now for the early release...but once the dust starts to settle in a few years do they tend to still command a premium?

Nothing but marketing jibberish IMO. Some World mints do have special sales of say, the first 1000 coins minted but that is completely different from this situation. Those World coins would be true "First Strikes" and I can see why they would command a premium, just like notes with low serial numbers. Just because a Silver Eagle was slabbed in the first 30 days of release, that doesn't mean it was one of the first struck or even struck with fresh dies- it could be the last coin to come from a die pair!
