It's pretty much a given that if a coin design incorporates a full- or near-full-figure human (vs. a portrait bust), one or both hands of the individual(s) portrayed will be visible. Such is definitely the case within the classic US commemorative coin series.
For each of the "hand" posts I made over in the "Post Your..." Gallery area of CCF, I discussed what role the hands were filling in the overall coin design - holding something, shaking with another, etc. Links to each post are listed below.
The length of the list points to how many coin within the classic series feature one or more human figures (most often standing) - they are definitely (along with animals) the dominant design element.
Note: The Isabella Quarter post also includes a video to demonstrate the tools the woman depicted on the coin's reverse is holding. No groundbreaking reveals are presented in the posts - there are a few lesser-known tidbits sprinkled in, however - but they do provide a closer look at each coin's design.
