okay so I have some coins that I have been told that I should put acetone on them. and I want too just I have never done it before so I gotta a couple questions id like to be clarified.
first how long should I put the coins in for? should I just lay them in a bowl or plastic? does it matter the size or will it be the same soaking time for all sizes? also can it affect proof coins in anyway? and ive heard you shouldent use it on copper but silver is fine, can I use it on nickel? also should I wash it off with distilled water or more acetone? thanks.

I put them in a glass small canning jar. I don't really think it makes a difference how long. I usually do overnight. I use a polyethylene tongs to get them out and in. I have another jar that has distilled water in it. I take them out of the first jar, swirl it around in the second jar, and then swirl it around in a 3rd jar that has clean acetone in it. I then let it air dry. I don't think it matters what metal you use because the acetone will only affect organic compounds. And, of course, metal is inorganic. Use ventilation and jars that can be sealed. Make sure the seal won't react terribly with the acetone. On the canning jar, I took the rubber gasket out so it is only a metal to glass seal. Not good for long term storsge but works OK for this purpose.

Avoid using plastic containers for acetone, as acetone can depolymerize certain types of plastic.

Acetone is "safe" for use on all metals, even copper. Yes, it can cause a chemical reaction on bright shiny copper, if you leave it sealed up in the jar for weeks exposed to bright sunlight or some other source of UV light. So don't do that.

As for time to soak I've found that if acetone doesn't at least start to budge it within a minute, then it's not going to budge it at all. But an overnight soak isn't going to hurt.

I've had no issues using acetone on copper. I do agree that it's wise to avoid sunlight when soaking--just find a place far from direct sunlight. Small glass jars with lids work great. I usually soak overnight was well. Longest was two weeks--took that long to remove all traces of very old gum-like crud from a time long past. Good, thorough rinse to follow.
