I'm going to start an America the Beautiful silver proof CAPS Album. Naturally, I will handle the coins with cotton gloves. I have a couple of questions first.

Some of the proof cases that I bought on ebay were very, very easy to open. Should I be concerned with tampering? I believe all proof S mint ATB Quarters are silver. Is that correct?

Can I safely use compressed air to remove dust and fuzz from the coins before they go in air-tite capsules?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I have this album in progress.

First, S-mint ATBs can be clad as well (there are both business and proof strike clads from the S-mint for the later years). I believe the cases are different colors; the coins themselves can be distinguished by looking at the edges.

I use cotton gloves to manage the coins into the air-tites, but even then, some of them are still getting smudged. One has a fingerprint, and I can't believe it's mine -- I had the gloves on the entire time. I figure the smudge came from oils or something that got onto the glove as I was handling them, or possibly the cloth I'm doing the work on, maybe even from handling the air-tites without the gloves.

I may replace the problem coins eventually but I'm curious what others have to say about this as well.
Rest in Peace

Yes and yes. Canned air is a must have even on some coins coming directly from the mint.

Yes you should. It's probably best to only buy from sellers that accept returns.

As Alpha mentioned San Francisco makes both clad and silver proofs.

Also, which CAPS ATB album(s) are you doing? I guess since you're *just* doing the Silver Proofs, you could use the National Parks Quarters Type Set - Album #2105.

Photos please!

I have the album. I have 6 of the 8 currently available proof sets, but the air-tites won't be delivered until Monday. I'll post pictures then.

I opened the 3 sets that were loose and vey easy to open. None of them show any sign of clad layers on the reeded edges. I know that's not proof positive, but short of putting an ice cube on it (which I obviously won't do) that's the best I can do. Maybe I'll do the tissue test.

Or weigh them. The silver proofs should be 6.25g.

I put 5 years of quarters in. I'll update it later when everything is in the album. I'm very happy with it so far.

Keep going! Individually they're not as interesting as the State series but they look nice as a set.

I have this album, and one like it for the 90% silver State Quarters.

The silver proofs are beautiful all laid out together.
Congrats on the very nice set in progress!
The 2018 silver proofs will be available next week.

I'm going to the Philly mint on Tuesday. I hope the gift shop will have them available then. I wouldn't mind avoiding the shipping charges.

You could also sign up for the product enrollment and get free budget shipping. You have a very nice looking album so far, keep us updated! I'm working on the Dansco 8146 and 8147, but have yet to put any coins in them. I actually prefer the ATB Quarters over the State Quarters, and I like seeing the contrast between the different finishes.
