Here's a coin that seems could have some additional info added to the Vicky Cent site.
Coin PC59-141 reverse I5 paired with obverse 43.
I have three of this pairing and they all have a repunched "E" in the ONE that is not mentioned on the Haxby site.
There is also file marks around leaf 3-4 again not mentioned on the site but I can see them on the coin Haxby used.
This example is a very early die state as there are no die crack present on either side of the coin.
It could be noted that the " I & C " in VICTORIA are triple punched this can also be seen on the coin Haxby used.
There is a notable clash on the reverse in this state that I'm having difficulty capturing in pictures this is noted but not shown on the site.
Just for those interested.

Cheers, Bill

Yes, I've also had problems with any reverse in the Haxby site with that specific type of vine break at leaf 2.

Thanks Hounddog for the excellent description of this die pair and suggestions for the catalog! I will list these for this die pair in the notebook I keep. We haven't made any changes in the catalog for awhile, but will add at least some of these to the next round. With 321 dies (222 reverse, 99 obverse) to keep track of, it's hard to show everything that's there on each one. But we try to add helpful information when we can.

There's no end to what you can find on 1859's when you have higher grade examples to study. There's a lot of re-punching and die marks that disappear as the coin wears. That's part of the fascination of collecting and studying them. The I of VICTORIA on the obverse 43 is one of those major re-punches that is discernible on even lower grade coins. A closeup photo of that would definitely be helpful in the catalog as a die defining feature.

To contrast Hounddog Bills very early die state, here is a very late die state with circumferential cracking almost around the entire coin and the crack from 5 to N to N up the center of the coin. The circumferential cracking is heaviest L7-L1 and lightest L16-L12. The only leaves that don't seem to be involved are L10 & L11.

That last coin that Dan posted has always been one of my favorite 59's, even though many other variety types were much more offset or glaring. I love the "5"! and the D/C that went on forever.

I just looked at my other two and I also have one in the late die state with all the die cracks and circular crack though the leaves.
Couldn't't help but notice the clog at the vine of leaf 16 has now cleared in this later die state.

Cheers, Bill
