I have only recently been able to attend two local coin shows and found very little in way of help for my collection. My nearest coin dealer wants to trade gold and silver and has very little interest in restocking inventory in addition he wants 250$ for a G4 1914-d Lincoln and other outrageous prices. There are no other shops within a three hour drive for me. I have to rely on most if not all my purchases from ebay (to expensive for the most part). I figure some of you have other options and was hoping some of you could give me advice on other places to look? I have neither the time nor the finances to travel to Las Vegas or California or Florida for larger coin shows. Help ple ASE
Rest in Peace

Welcome to the hobby of coin collecting . Expensive , isn't it ? Well most of us are in the same boat .But we strive to find the coins we want at the price that we are comfortable with . I'm assuming that your not into CRH'ing . Stay away from e-Bay or Esty unless you are experienced in knowing about cleaned coins or any other coins with issues that some sellers will try entice newbies with a reduced price .
I would stay with the small coin shows ,if you see something you like and the price is too high , make them a fair offer .Most of the time they will either accepted your offer or counter it at a discounted price . Good luck and have fun .

I am also pretty new to the hobby. I have found some luck at antique malls. Some over priced some reasonable. Good luck

While it is true that Shipping Killed the Radiostar, er, coin collectors, online shopping is going to be your best bet. ebay has it all including shysters but part of the trick there is to search regularly for better deals and try to get combined shipping.

There are other online sources, you just have to discover them through a Google search. London Coin Center is one I use every so often but mostly for supplies. Instagram has a slew of collectors trading and selling and of course these community sites also have listings.

You have to find reasonable justifications and concessions when purchasing online... "it is cheaper than gas or an airplane ticket". You also have to prioritize and beef up your patience! I want one of everything now too but, realistically, it ain't happening.

The lifestyle is lifelong and your collection can wait so, have fun with it while you can!

Peace out from Canuckville.

A good one. I also watch the Garage Sale listings. Oftentimes, if I go to one, I will specifically ask if they have any coins they wish to part with.

I once saw a guy at a Coinstar machine cashing in his pennies. I stopped him, bought what he had and then accompanied him (dangerous yes I know) back to his home where he sold me the last of his generic stash.

While I don't suggest anyone walk off with some stranger to a secluded location to buy pennies, I do want to highlight my insane hunt and the lengths I will go to acquire my Preciouses, lol.

Report this Post to the Staff Go to Top of Page

I can't bring myself to coin roll search or go the bank for the coin star machine. Following someone to buy the stash sounds like something I would do. I interact with over 200 people per day at school maybe I should mention that I am interested in coins and do their grandparents have a few old coins in a jewelry box. Maybe they are not specifically collecting and would consider selling.
I feel like I have limited options since I am no where near a coin shop and have only the weekend to go to one.
I do like the idea of garage sales and estate sales, but do not know how to proceed from there. If anyone on the forum can part with that info, it would be appreciated.

That is a big ole can of worms, I wouldn't recommend opening.

I would hate to see someone do something they shouldn't.

@Gros,

For purchasing, unless you know what you are buying ebay can be a hit or miss. I have 6 coin shops near me with very good prices. I can recommend those but they are nowhere you in (I believe you are in TX), for purchasing and with good prices and fast shipment, I recommend Allens in Ohio. Here is the website:

http://www.allensinc.com/coins/us/index.htm

Ask for the coin shop, you can ask for Doug, he is the sales person I use. Tell him Helder sent you.

If you are ever in NJ, check out Pete, he has a weekly newsletter, I usually can't say no :(

I've been to countless garage sales and estate sales, and it is possible to find goodies. But sometimes I would go to 60 garage sales on a Saturday morning with no luck. Sometimes I would buy two or three small collections only visiting 40 sales. It is the combination of who you are asking, how many people you are asking, and how to ask. I usually hit strictly community sales and estate sales. Individual sales are usually a waste of time unless they are in a good area. Going to sales provides a low chance of buying mid range to higher end coins, usually people have wheat cents and a few silver coins.
It took a while for me to realize this, but going to garage sales is pretty much going door to door asking if they happen to have coins for sale.

You'd be surprised how many people have coin collections. Maybe they've never collected themselves, but their grandfather had a collection and passed it down. I tell only my closest friends and family that I collect coins, because of security reasons. So maybe it isn't the best idea to go around school telling everybody that you collect, but maybe hint to some of your friends that you are able to buy coins.

Lol I love this!

Coming from Canada and desperate to have access to pennies at face value to coinroll search... yeah, I knew you wouldn't understand.

I got struck with this debilitating collecting bug much after the death of our beloved penny in 2012. You Lot got many original hoards stashed away that likely contributed to the unprofitability in minting them. I would assume that a multitude of Canadians have been tossing all sorts of manor of coinage in cans and Texas Mickies for years and those numbers multiplied at the announcement of no more pennies. I would also assume that the vast portion of these collectors don't have not a one in a 2x2 flip and might sell for as low as double face and or but likely less.

Going door to door doesn't sound as half crazy anymore, lol. Actually, it is already being done, I've seen numerous Online Ads offering to buy collections. For me, the best resource for Stashes has been Family. My mother and both her sisters have had their generic mini hoards organized and properly stored by my cotton gloved hand and of course given pieces from the hoard for my own collection.

Right! I forgot to mention online resources that allow you to meet up. I use Craigslist quite frequently, but I've noticed the traffic and ads have gone down the past two years. I keep a "Wanted Coins" ad on there at all times, and that's how I've scored many collections.
I am thinking about transferring over to Facebook to buy and sell coins at. The sole reason why I haven't yet is because I have a lifelong running streak of not using certain social media platforms.
So give Craigslist and Facebook a try. It is convienent because you get to see the coins in person and have no sales tax, ebay fees, or shipping costs.

Also try the online auctions. Heritage is a good place to start, as you can also
see what the selling prices are. Then you can bid accordingly for the stuff you want.
