The big bag of memorials I've been puddling through hasn't coughed up very much, but the couple that have been in there have been pretty good ones. This is the latest find from that lot, with maybe 2500 more to go.

Very nice! How do you go through a bag like this? Do you like to sort by date and hunt batches all at once by date, or do you just search coin by coin? I personally always sort by date for pennies, but always curious how others hunt.

Evidently, that lot is all about quality over quantity.
Congrats.

There is no way I have time to sort coins. I pull out a handful, drop them on my pad and rock through them by whatever comes up. If I'm spending more than 3 seconds on a coin it has something worth following up on. It is helpful that I have memorized pretty much every variety on the entire Lincoln Cent series to one degree or another. I look at the date and the important points for that date and if I don't see something then it's gone. Errors are usually spotted pretty easily while scanning for varieties.

Let me add as an example 1972, as that is what this thread is. For 1972 I first look at the top of the B in LIBERTY, where it is usually pretty easy to see the master die doubling. If MDD is there, I look along the top of the horizontal bar of the 2 and nothing else. If no MDD I look at GOD WE for any of the major doubled dies. And done.

@TropicalBats The main reason I asked was I was curious if you had gotten to the point of basically having every variety memorized for Lincoln cents lol. I pretty much have them memorized for quarters, nickels, and dimes since there are comparatively very few, but I still need to pull up Wexler's/VV or I'll forget about a lot of the more minor/oddball varieties for Lincoln cents. It does help though that certain time periods tend to have pretty similar doubled dies and in similar locations though.

Well minors I pretty much don't hunt on circulated coins, although maybe I see them along the way and pull them. Minors I pretty much save for BU rolls, where I have better coins and can see what's going on with even light stuff. I lay out BU rolls and scan them as a group of 50 in 5 rows of 10 coins. Makes it easy to see when something looks different after staring at 27 that all look normal.

It is kind of like speed dating, but you don't have to marry the coin. Look too long, you find the Machine Doubling and are left with a question of is it or isn't it? But the real DDO's are spotted instantly. If not, move on to the next coin put the past coins back to working going their job. (making change)

I'm lucky if I can remember my name everyday, let alone all cent varieties!
