Hello,

I have a 1938 Mercury dime - I received from someone who had it marked ms 65!

From my estimation, this is a cleaned coin made to look pretty and sold far above its grade. I am not seeing the lines as if it was scrubbed - does this more like it was dipped? I can see left over residue from cleaning. I would appreciate your input as I am thinking I am going to learn to identify what has been done to the coins I am looking at.

I am guessing the grade on this is actually more like vf-20 which equates it with bullion pricing. Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything that would indicate it actually is something higher grade than that.

initial reaction is AU, but excess jpg compression on your photos is hiding the surface details, which leads to grading uncertainty

Looking at the grading indicator on the coin community website for mercuries - it indicates

"EF40 Extremely Fine:Diagonal bands show only slight wear. Braids and hair before ear show clearly."

As I interpret that - I am thinking the hair and braids should be mostly defined? Or is it just - you can generally see them.

The reverse has great detail - no problem for me there - but the obverse seems to show a good amount of wear in the hair details.

Can someone educate me a bit - I think I'm going to have to do a contest to give some coin away for all the help you all provide :)
Rest in Peace

Thanks John! Thats a cool tool.

It does look xf 40 range detail wise I think.

How bad does the cleaning affect the grade on this one? I am not see cleaning marks on it.

I know xf 40 won't matter much on this coin but just for future reference.

as your grading skills improve over time you will find that you cant just look at one or two markers to determine the grade. it can get you into the ballpark but then you need to look at the coin as a whole. diagonals look like an XF coin should. quite possible the hair in front of the ear would be from a strike weakness. the sharpness of the lettering, date and leaves make this assessment correct
