Just wondering why this has a black tint to it? And where is the 'S' from?
Thank you in advance

Coins surface was altered during its lifetime. Wasn't struck that way.

The "S" indicates it was minted in San Francisco.

There are many possible reasons for the discoloration. It may have been buried at one point.

Environmental tarnishing/discolouration/damage. Not a mint error, there is nothing in the minting process that would cause such an affect. Damage is damage, however created.

The black is almost certainly a copper oxide/sulfide complex. The inorganic oxides and sulfides of copper are both black, and they cannot be removed with acetone.

It could have been painted, color with a magic marker several times, nail polished or as mentioned already it turned color. But in circulation it rubs of the affect on the highest points first. Eventually is left in circulation long enough, it will turn back to the right planchet color.

If it was black paint, ethylene chloride would remove it, but
it would destroy the coin in the process.
