I've done some research on this coin and I would like to get a second opinion.

This appears to look like 1974-D Bronze penny, but upon closer inspection I can tell that it's just a coating, with copper showing in warn areas.

But I'm still not sure if its significant or someone playing with a chemistry set?

Do you mean brass? It is the color of brass.

A normal 1974 cent is 95% copper and 5% zinc.

First thing to do: get the weight of your coin in grams.

It weighs 3.14 grams. I compared it to a 1937 wheat that weighed 3.13 grams.

When a perfectly normal, copper colored cents are exposed to certain chemicals (some acids in paper) they can take on a bright, brassy color. I had that happen recently with a nice LWC-09 VDB. I'd but it obverse down in a cheap coin folder so kids could see the initials better. After a few months I remembered to take it out to transfer it back to my album and WOW! It was yellow brassy. [I know: stupid, so save your posts]. I have another early 70-LMC that became yellow - don't know why on that one.

In brief, if it's made of brass 95/5 we shouldn't be surprised when it looks like brass. IMHO.

Hey wbarkley, I have a similar coin, bright as heck. Couldn't believe it is 1974 d. Compared to my other normal brown 1974d it looks brand new. More like a zinc coin. Lemme know if you find out anything. Thanks.

I have the same one except no mintmark. Someone must have been coating them with something for some reason.

Could just be toning, but I'm leaning more towards a chemistry class experiment in plating that is now wearing off. Either way it's just post mint damage ( PMD).

Reminds me of a single layer of brass/gold plating that is worn off the outside edge of the coin and slowly going away also on the faces of the coin.
