I found InfiniteInterest's 11/21/2007 post on 1959 mint sets very interesting. I also note he uses a Franklin half as an avatar. In this post he was quite fascinated that all 1959 mint sets had a type B Washington quarter for Philadelphia. Sundry other folk chimed in with similar thoughts.

I am wondering if anybody every noticed that the Philly halves were a similar case. All would be type 2 where the eagle has 3 sharp feathers to the left of its perch rather than 4 indistinct ones.

proofart, Welcome to the forum, after reading your post I checked my mint sets for 1959 and noticed on the envelope I wrote FS-25-1959-901, type B reverse.I wanted to check if the half was what you said and sure enough 3 distinct feathers on the eagles right side, which is on my left side while viewing the coin, checked my 1958 set and found the 4 feathers, 3 larger than the 4th.Now I need to do more research to see just what this is, not up on my FRANKLINS lately, thanks for the information, good luck and be well, Mike

Type 2 Franklin half reverse first showed up on most of the 1956 proofs and all proofs after that date. The two varieties for 1956 do have a degree of popularity. Type 2 also showed up on many 1958 and 1959 Philly circulation strikes. At least most 1959 mint sets have the 1959 type 2 half in it. There is an apparently third type for 1959, but it really is a class III doubled die made from both types 1 and 2. It is shown on page 270 of the CherryPickers' Guide Fourth edition, Volume II. It is not identified there as a class III.
Note the wide separation in the dot to the left of E in EPU.
