whats your favorite coin that you own and whats the story that makes it special?
mine would be a 1970 2 and 1/2 gulden from the netherlands in pretty bad condition so I'm not even gonna try and grade it maybe later ill post some pics. its been a good luck charm for me for a few years. my cousin inlisted in the army a few months before the war began and was stationed in Germany. He traveled around some with his company and ended up in Amsterdam. he got this coin for me and held onto it for 6 months before he got a 2 week leave to come home. he saved it for me and ive kept it ever since. that was the last time I saw him he is still in iraq. so thats my story and I hope some others have an interesting story for their favorite coin as well.

It's one of two English pennies, one from 1136 (doesn't look much but I love the period that much that to actually have something that was there and saw the events at first hand is a wonderful feeling to have).
The other one is one dating from the 930s and I like that one for two reasons, when I started out in this hobby I promised myself i'd get one... it did take me a good 15 years to fulfil that promise, and secondly it was my first Anglo-Saxon coin and I sold off the vast bulk of my collection to get it!

i have yet to see a 1 gulden. this is the only netherlands coin ive seen except for the euros. I think most coins with animals are nice coins. this one would be much better in perfect condition but you can see the history in this coin.

Hi Susan, That bust looks like the eagle was half "whizzed"--The verticle lines going thru the left half of the eagle definitely looks whizzed--And a lousy job at that, even so, it is a nice coin--Whats it worth you think? real value mind ya, not sentimental value--

This is going to sound really strange, but Mike sent me 6 different Bust Halves to look through and told me that I had to pick one to keep. Even with the harsh cleaning lines on the reverse, this coin spoke to me. I don't know why, but I just fell in love with it. I would estimate actual market value on this coin around $80 or so. It has since been sent into ANACS and graded at EF details with a net grade of VF20 due to the cleaning. I agree wholeheartedly with this grade. I especially like this coin because it has full strikes on all of the lettering and the overall toning of the coin is just gorgeous. The cleaning is much more evident in the pics than on the actual coin.

demonboy279 I am a huge fan of Netherland coins and have built a nice collection since 2002. I DO like there gold coins as they use a very thin planchet which makes for very large coins regardless of the gold content. My favorite silver and golds, at this time, would be the young head Wilhelmina which was struck from 1892 thru 1897 (I believe)! For some reason or another I just love that design and they used it on 10 cent, 25 cents, one gulden and the gold 10 gulden. Also very fond of the silver and gold ducats including the modern stikes!

I've been thinking about getting me a few more Netherland coins. Thats a beautiful country and I've always wanted to live there. I think that has something to do with why I love my 2 and 1/2 Gulden so much. Only time will tell with what I get though.
Susan thats a pretty coin. The wear on the front looks as if it brings the design to life. More like a very well drawn sketch than a coin design.
