This 1930-d was supposedly taken from a original roll or so I was told. PCGS says smoothed surfaces. What are they seeing that I don't? I did put under 50pwr microscope and saw nothing unusual on either side. The fields are unusually clear of marks. If metal was moved should there be some discoloration somewhere?

Can you take a photo of full PCGS Slab . Who said it came out of an original roll . Unless I'm wrong , OBW rolls of Lincoln Cents didn't start until 1934 .

Could "smoothed surfaces" mean plated, in this case?

As stated, show the full slab.
Sometimes you can tell by the code number what the problem was.

Does-Anyone-See-If-The-Surface-Has-Been-Smoothed-Out-On-1930-D-Lincoln

I purchased this coin in 2003 from a friend, who told me he just opened a roll of 1930-d Lincolns. Since the price was great and I was going to put in dansco album, there was no reason for him to lie to me. The coin looks great in hand it's the perfect color everywhere. I have handled it with care ever since. Under 50X magnification I saw no moved metal. I have two coins from PCGS that just came back with the same smoothed detail and both look great. The third coin was the 1932 Lincoln which came back ms-66+. The two with the smoothed detail look better than the 1932. should I resubmit?

The 98 before the stroke indicates the coin was damaged.
As suggested, possibly plated. ( Just a guess)

I apologize but do you mean this coin was plated like a 1943 penny is sometimes? I have a plated 1918-d Lincoln that was plated and they look so different..

This picture does not give the coin it's true color. I was experimenting with different setting and posted the picture that gave the most detail.

Please if possible tell me where to look for damage?

In this picture I can see striations in the fields.

Also, the area where the back of the coat meets the field and at the bottom between the bust and the rim doesn't look right. The coin looks to have been whizzed long ago and retoned.

I'm with PCGS.

Hey Bad Thad, I have always looked forward to your opinion along with several others who are very knowledgeable on these matters. Please enlighten me about whizzing. I have read numerous times that hairlines and cleaning would continue into the the bust of Lincoln. To be able to clean in the area between the coat and the rim would be extremely talented ( I think) . I don't have the coin in hand but I think some of that may be on the plastic?

I guess I was disappointed with the result from PCGS. Of all the coins I submitted to this particular coin was one of the few I felt would get a straight grade. The first picture I submitted for the topic is what I am looking at even under a 10 pwr loupe. Had I not paid for photograde I wonder if that would have gotten the okay.

Just saying ( sent with gentle effect) THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO Lincoln CENTS by David Lange page 160 for the 1930-d. "Original rolls may still exist, as many of these cents were retained by banks during the Great Depression and discovered years later.

I highly value your opinion and read your posts every chance I get as well as several other experienced members hopefully you can help me with other coins I have problems understanding.

Yeah, I don't see it often but I have to agree with "whizzed" or "smoothed surfaces' it's a shame really, looks like it was probably low MS and after messing with with it got AU details.

take a look at some MS examples of 1930D or even AU, they just have more surface blemishes as struck, a tad of "orange peel" to them. die attrition, Die Deterioration, blebs or little bumps on the surface as the die wears out, as the lettering moves closer and closer to the rims as it's deforming.

diagnostics to identify smoothing is to look at the areas of the fields in protected areas like between the legends and devices and the denticles or rim, and compare them to the inner fields. The surfaces in the protected are much rougher, more course than those of the open areas. With some coins another diagnostic is that there will be luster in the more protected areas of the fields and none in the more open areas of the fields, because the buffing has removed the luster. kind of hard to detect on and AU coin that circulated. Just saying, those little tight areas, like IGWT between the letters on the obverse, and EPU on the reverse between the letters will look rougher, and have a stronger luster than the wide open areas, and then you will begin to see it and understand it for what it is.

and I'm sure someone will appear to disagree with me and tell me I'm wrong because that's what usually happens on this site when I share.
I'm not an expert, and I don't claim to be, take it with a grain of salt. Just thought I'd share today
