Thought I knew a little about Canada, but just learning of a former Canadian territory. Territory of Keewatin from 1876 - 1905. I know this dates to after Confederation, but was there any coinage or currency produced specific to the Territory? Thanks for any information.

The Territory of Keewatin was part of Canada and no coins were minted with the exception of HBC 'made beaver' and fox tokens.

The date of 1905 coincides with the creation of the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan , and the enlargement of Manitoba from its 1870 inception as the postage stamp province as well as the expansion of Ontario and Quebec northwardto Hudson's Bay and the Artic Ocean respectively
District of Keewatin
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Not to be confused with Keewatin Region, Northwest Territories, although much of their territory overlapped.

The District of Keewatin was a territory of Canada and later an administrative district of the Northwest Territories. It was created in 1876 by the Keewatin Act, and originally it covered a large area west of Hudson Bay. In 1905, it became a part of the Northwest Territories and in 1912, its southern parts were adjoined to the provinces of Manitoba and Ontario, leaving the remainder, now called the Keewatin Region, with a population of a few thousand people. On April 1, 1999, the Keewatin Region was formally dissolved, as Nunavut was created from eastern parts of the Northwest Territories, including all of Keewatin.

The name "Keewatin" comes from Algonquian roots—either k#299;w#275;htin (#5230;#5133;#5158;#5198;#5155;) in Cree or giiwedin (#5230;#5132;#5198;#5328;) in Ojibwe—both of which mean north wind in their respective languages. In Inuktitut, it was called Kivalliq (#5229;#5465;#5354;#5333;#5509;)—a name which persists as the Kivalliq Region in Nunavut.

@cdngmt Thanks. So now I'm researching the HBC 'made beaver' brass tokens. I found limited info on wikipedia. Were these dated? and how available would they be?
