Why are Dansco albums considered the elite of albums? Is it the appearance, the binding, the preservation aspects? I purchased a Littleton Archive Quality album over the Dansco for LMC 1959-2011. It has more specific slots for S mints, S proofs, clear S, filled S varieties. Yet it lacks spots for 1959-1964 proof strikes as well as 1965-1967 SMS. I purchased an extra page for these. How are the Dansco albums superior to all others? It seems to be a status thing to me. Their series albums offer a lot of choices. I am relatively naive in these aspects so please explain to me the desire for "Dansco" over all others. It seems to me to be some kind of status cymbal in the hobby rather than a practicality, especially since the unavailability of their product. What makes them the recognized standard that people boast about? |

I have to admit that I don't quite get the obsession with Dansco either. It does seem though that the quality of their products is very high.
Personally, I prefer the blue pages of Whitman (or Lighthouse) as I think silver coins show particularly well against a blue background.

Explain higher quality. In what respect? Appearance? Gold letters? Binding? Preservation?
Is my album of less value because it is not in a Dansco?

Are my coins not properly stored because it is a Littleton album rather than a Dansco? My coins are in a VW instead of a BMW?

I think Dansco has better archival material, but the storage environment is also as important, similar postings had talked about this before in comparing quality between them.

It personal preferences, I believe I read before that the acetate in Dansco is thicker, firmer and Whitman/Littleton is flimsier, but I don't have them to compare it to. Have you check out between them? Why you think your collection is inferior if its in not in Dansco?

Everyone brags about their Dansco collection as if mine doesn't matter. Is it because they are hard to find now?
Please direct me to an analysis of the materials used for preservation issues compared to others. If Dansco is much more superior in this respect, I am sure the data must exist. Independent analysis, not from the manufacturer.
I refute the premise that if it ain't Dansco, it ain't squat.
Please prove to me otherwise.
Convince me of their exceptional qualities other than status and make me a convert.
Why is Dansco the best.

Wow.
Of the coins in my collection which reside in albums, 90%+ are in Danscos. Am I part of the Dansco bourgeoisie? Don't think so, but that's up to others to judge I suppose. I've managed to obtain my Danscos at decent prices (which is important to me), mostly acquiring lightly used ones at less cost.
My advice is, go with whatever album one desires.

All of my albums consist of entirely Dansco albums. It started off when I was looking for a type set. The Whitman album has the flowing hair and draped bust coinage, which I wasn't (at the time) looking to ever buy in my lifetime. So I settled for a Dansco. I enjoy the uniformity of a coin collection. Even though it may not be the best cost effective option, all of my albums are Danscos. I swapped my State Quarters from a Littleton folder to a Dansco even though the album costs as much as the coins. Plus, the quarters were toning. I like the quality of Dansco. I've picked up other albums, and they felt flimsy and of lesser quality. I don't have facts about material strength and coin preservation time, but for these reasons I've settled for Dansco. I have albums from 4 different manufacturers, of those 4, Dansco are superior in many ways. There is a full review here: http://goccf.com/t/356923After doing the review I purchased 2 lighthouse albums which are nice but don't have the quality materials as Dansco, I would grade them slightly below the Littleton. I won't hash it out, but I am very reluctant to buy Whitman now after having them for several years. As to which is better for you, that's up to you. Edited by hfjacinto

My two oldest Dansco albums are nearing 37 years old. Most are more than 30 years old. I have been quite happy with them. For what it is worth, just carl has been using Whitman albums for as long or longer, he seems to be happy with those as well. If you like albums (as opposed to slabs, capsules, 2x2s, etc), then Dansco is a good choice. The albums and pages seem to hold up better, but it does not mean the others are crap. Your mileage will vary depending on how your care for and store the albums. |
