I posted in July about a purchase of a 1945 narrow date variety of the Newfoundland 5c. At the time, this variant was not listed in the Trends or any other reference, aside from Barry Borselino's unpublished manuscript.

I thought that it might be worth while updating this: the coin has since been listed in the Trends, though there is no indication of price point. I can report two sales of this coin in the F15/VF20 range for $300 and $150. One was sold over ebay and the other through a Newfoundland coins Facebook group. I've seen no reports of this coin in >VF20 though I suspect they're out there (there are many AU and MS examples of the normal version). Based on Barry's estimate that the 1945ND is ~1% of the total extant 1945s, it is about as common as the 1873H 5c which trends $2,000 to $3,000 at this time.

My personal opinion is that this coin should be listed on CoinsandCanada.com and in the Charlton. I would be curious to know if there's any way to help bring this about? I've attached images of the reverse of the 1945 and the ND 1945 for reference.

I bought a 1945 5c narrow date ICCS EF40 on ebay a year or so ago, for about $80.

I was going to buy this one but missed the auction. Well done.

I'll post a pic when I get a chance.

This is a very interesting variety. I did a quick search and found the following information (the information below has been pulled from Barry's ebay listing for his book):

"One example of this is the 1945 Narrow Date, Repunched "45", NFLD 5 Cents, for which only 22 coins have been located out of a total 2,582 researched examples. These numbers would suggest that fewer than 1,800 coins of this variety were originally minted!".

Do you know if Barry's book is still available?

Barry is pretty happy to share his book - which keeps growing and growing. I think it's over 600 pages now...

Below are pictures of my 1945 narrow date.

I struggle with taking good pictures. I do need better equipment to take better pictures. The coin looks much better in hands. I don't think there is any wear on this coin so I believe that it would be MS (perhaps 63 or 64), but I am not an expert.
