Japan 1977 10 Yen Rim Markings - Coin Community Forum

David Graham Pillar of the Community Australia 1610 Posts	Posted 10/12/2021 05:04 am Hi all, I was about to recycle this Japanese 1977 10 Yen coin when I noticed some odd markings on the rim. The markings look like they are contemporary with the minting (not PMD). They are consistent on both sides but there is no evidence of the marking further in from the rim. I'm somewhat stumped. A search of google threw nothing my way so am hoping the good folks at CCF can shed some light on this. Thanks Report this Post to the Staff

It does look like the blank had another design and then re-used with the 10 Yen design. Have decided to keep it in the hope I'll get an answer down the track. Report this Post to the Staff
Sap Moderator Australia 16810 Posts	Posted 10/18/2021 7:50 pm My assumption would be that it is, indeed, post-mint damage. It can't have been something stamped onto the metal prior to the blank being punched out; the rim is the least likely place for such detail to survive. Rather, I think it's some kind of Encased Coin - a normal coin is placed in a ring of another metal, then a new design stamped onto that ring - part of which bled onto the coin. The ring was subsequently removed (or the coin simply fell out).
