Call me crazy but I do collect the new presidentials :)

I originally started to just collect your proofs and BU's. I have all that complete of course and in my binder with the satins too, so I ventured off to a new goal. I started collecting graded examples. Goals were to have all PF69 and all SMS MS68 coins graded from NGC. I have obtained the proofs easily and cheap, but the MS68's are getting sparse. I have 5 out of the first 16 needed. Only place I can really find these is ebay and some/most have Buy it now prices of 100+, not to mention I rarely see new ones for sale. Now I do not really want to spend hundreds on these moderns, so I'm thinking about quitting the set :(

I went to NGC's site to see if I can see how many were even graded at this level and of course you need to become a member to see the census. I think I got myself into something that I doubt I want to continue considering the prices. It seems that PCGS has these for cheaper? Did I miss something here? I can get a full 16pc set of 2008 positions A&B for $150.

Hoping for some opinions/advice. Maybe someone can shoot me the census numbers or something to give me hope ;) I'm overall confused and thiking about selling these coins to fund some other purchases.

Thanks all.

ceaton from my experience I would stop buying and wait a few years to buy them I have noticed that the longer you wait to buy modern coins the lower the prices go,you see it happening every few months or so so just hold off and watch them go down when you start to see a bottom then purchase the ones you need hope this helps you out.

Thanks Hollywood. I just wonder if there are even a large amount graded at 68. If not, the price will stay higher i'd think even 5 years down the road. I dunno, I think I might have to dump these and either wait like you said, or maybe go for a lower grade which doesn't seem worth it really.
Rest in Peace

It's amazing to me the emphasis on slabbing modern coins, especially the non circulating bullion ones. You would think with the hoped for state of the art minting techniques and equipment, high MS grades like 68 or higher would be the NORM. It was not too long ago that grades like that were a dream, if not unattainable. Now, sadly, they're all too commonplace. Be careful investing in this kind of stuff, IMHO.

Like You I have also Started the Presidential dollar Slabs. I had all the set from circulation, because since 1959 all my dansco's have been filled with a mint set. There for I needed a place for them when they came out. The slabs were just something to keep me occupied, But I went PCGS. I have no idea of #'s from NGC but PCGS-Satin have about 500 for each position in MS-68. I just completed my sets to date now have to think about 2009

Go register with Heritage Auctions. You'll get access to their sale database, which includes Census data for each coin at the time of its' sale, among other things. I take no responsibility for what you might do, being exposed to so many gorgeous coins for sale, though.

I figured that PCGS had more registered or something since you can buy a lot of them for cheap. I might sell what I have and go that route instead, but still I'm not sure! I think this whole thing was an "oops" goal.

Thanks Dave about the Heritage tip, i'll do that tonight! You might have opened a can of worms though, keep that in mind! :) Thanks all for the input.
