I have a 2009 $100 star note, is it worth anything? How can you tell if a star note is worth something?

It depends on the district and the condition of the note. Your description is a bit vague. A photo of the front and back would be ideal, but at a minimum, we need the complete serial number and an approximate description of its condition.

Irrespective of whatever the premium value that a star in the serial number may add to the overall current value of the note,
that with high face value Notes, the continuous downwards pressure that inflation has will force the real buying value downwards year on year.

This Note was issued 12 years ago, in 2009.
With assumed average inflation rate of 2%, the buying power in 2009 is only $78.85 today.

For this reason,
much better to consider One Dollar star Notes instead. The loss would have been 21 Cents, not $21.
